ADMISSIONS AND REGISTRATION INFORMATION
New students entering a new Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) school in the Fall of 2008 need to register during the Options enrollment period, which will take place in January 2008. We will attempt to keep this website up to date as more information is available. You may also go to the OUSD enrollment page for information.
IMPORTANT ADVISORY FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN SEEKING TO ENTER KINDERGARTEN AT HILLCREST IN 2008 AND BEYOND:
Living In The Hillcrest Neighborhood Does Not Guarantee Enrollment At Hillcrest For Incoming Kindergarten Children. Hillcrest Has Limited Site Capacity. If More Children Apply Than Spots Are Available, The District May Redirect Students To Other Oakland Schools. Please contact the District for more information.
When faced by more applicants than spaces available for kindergarten at Hillcrest, the OUSD has implemented its enrollment policy by first admitting children who live in the Hillcrest attendance area who also have siblings already attending Hillcrest and then conducting a lottery among the remaining children who have applied to Hillcrest and live in the attendance area.
To make its policies clear to the public, this year, OUSD has indicated it intends to clarify in its materials under the new Options program that students in a neighborhood are not guaranteed their neighborhood school and that there may be lotteries for schools that are impacted, like Hillcrest. OUSD is further examining how it determines which students that do not already have siblings at the school will be admitted for 2008 when there are more applicants than spaces available. The exact number of spaces available has not yet been determined but is expected to be about 40 slots to comply with state class size requirements of 20 students per class in grades K through 3.
WHAT CAN PARENTS DO?
- Anticipate that there will be limited spots.
- Understand that enrollment at Hillcrest is not guaranteed.
- Ensure that they understand and fully complete all forms for the OUSD Options Program.
- Explore all schooling options for their children that they deem appropriate and not assume that every neighborhood child will be admitted to Hillcrest.
INTRA-DISTRICT TRANSFERS
It is not expected that there will be any open spots in the upper grades for transfers to Hillcrest from other schools in the district.
ENROLLING AFTER KINDERGARTEN
There is a waiting list to obtain admission to Hillcrest after kindergarten. You can ask to be placed on this list and if space becomes available in the school, you will be notified. Typically, students are not admitted after kindergarten although occasionally space has become available and students have been admitted. Please call the school for more information.

Enrollment Update January 30, 2008
The district staff issued a letter on January 30, 2008, to Principals, Parents, and Guardians to let them know how the enrollment priorities will be established for the 2008-2009 enrollment window.
This reflects implementation of the Board policy that was adopted on December 19, 2007, to provide an interim solution for any overcrowded school. Click here to read the letter (pdf file). To read more about the Board policy adopted on December 19, 2007, go to the Enrollment Planning page.
